Our History
St. Paul’s was originally situated on the wooded bottom land of the Missouri River north of Bismarck on the Fort Berthold Reservation. Construction of the Garrison Dam in the 1950s forced the move of the chapel to higher ground. The chapel was moved to a spot on higher ground overlooking Lake Sakawea and dedicated on October 15, 1953. Burned to ground in January, 1955, it was replaced the current building in June, 1957.
Prayer Path and Traditional Garden
The prayer path will follow the river’s path through the reservation before it was flooded. The path will also show the locations of various villages along the river. The Arikara (Sahnish) traditional garden will feature Arikara seeds and mound plantings. Both the prayer path and traditional garden were made possible through a generous grant from United Thank Offering.
United Thank Offering grant is for creation care, specifically environmental reparations and link to diocesan UTO page. Read more at this link.
